My heart broke upon reading this. I'm in South Burlington now, and thought I'd call Dickie to talk about Notre Dame and the football season. Dick and Jimmy helped me so much when I was in college across the lake at Plattsburgh where they would go to bet the horses. I stayed in touch with each until they passed. They felt like family and I always will remember the laughs and stories that Dickie told me about his youth and

You were a very special person that will be greatly missed by family, friends, teammates , and the players you coached. The Breakfast Club just won't be the same without your always effervescent participation. God Bless You Coach Smullen.

RIP, Dick.

You enhanced my life and taught me many valuable life lessons while playing many rounds of golf with you at BCC in the 70's & early 80's.

Enjoy the fairways of heaven while kibitzing with your long gone friends of yesteryear.

Respectfully,
Joe Prairie

Katy and family,

I am so sorry for the loss of such a great man. Richard "Dick" Smullen was bigger then life, he touched so many. Although he is gone from out sight he lives on through our hearts. He will never be forgotten. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the family.

To the entire Smullen family my deepest condolences. it was great having Dick, Rosie and the entire Smullen clan living across the street. I always had a chuckle when my Mom would tell me that Dick called to discuss a local political happening or a big sporting event. Hopefully Dick can say Hi to Norb and Cassie now that they are together. Sorry for your loss and always remember the good times.

Mike, I am deeply sorry to read about the loss of your dad, Dick. To me he truly had a 'larger than life' persona. Seeing him at our SK&F meetings was always terrific. His contagious and upbeat personality lifted the spirits of everybody in the room. And, he always, but always, had something going on. The stories, all true, would fill a book. I remember him coming up to me and saying Scott "How much pressure can helium take before

I enjoyed every minute spent with Dick. He was such a super individual. I appreciated him coming to Williston years ago to instruct my Babe Ruth team in how to play better baseball. The biggest piece of advice was to always hustle--you never know whom is watching you. And, I love his story about facing Jackie Robinson as a teenager--with the Hall of Famer giving him advice on how to defend against fast baserunners like himself.
