Eleanor F. McDonald, 93, passed away peacefully in her home on July 4, 2017, in Burlington, surrounded by love. Eleanor was born in 1923 to Oscar and Delia Mayo of Hood Street, Winooski. Ellie loved her family home that her father, Oscar built. Ellie attended Elementary and High School in Winooski. As a young girl Ellie loved being a member of the 4-H Club. Ellie met John, the love of her life, at the Black Cat Café on Bank Street in Burlington. She loved telling the story of how John first asked her to dance. Ellie and John were married in 1947 at St. Stephen's Church in Winooski, and enjoyed 67 years of marriage. They were devout parishioners of St. Mark's Church and was a member of the Ladies of St. Mark. Ellie was employed by the Liberty Mutual Insurance Company and then went on to retire from the claims department at Nationwide Mutual Insurance. Ellie loved to sew and knit for her family, and was a talented artist. She and John had great adventures traveling with friends over the years. Ellie loved spending time with her grandchildren, family get-togethers, daily rides and stopping for lunch or a creemee with her husband, John. Ellie adored her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was nurturing, sweet, caring, loving, gracious and dignified. Family always came first. Eleanor is survived by her children; son John of Burlington; daughter Gail Welch and husband, Mike, of South Burlington; daughter, Patty Sundberg and husband, Gary, of Grand Isle; grandchildren; Andrew McDonald, Patrick McDonald, Jessee McDonald, Chris Welch, Catherine Welch, Kristin (Sundberg) Kent, Andy Sundberg and three great-grandchildren. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Elsa Wheel; nephews and nieces Susan Patenaude, Karen O'Hagan, David Wheel, Jeffrey Wheel, and Jeanine Blais. Eleanor was predeceased by her husband and love of her life, John in 2014 and her older sister, Helena O'Hagan in 1999. Ellie was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister. Her endless love and compassion will continue on in every life she touched. We would like to thank the Visiting Nurses Association of Colchester for their support and kindness. Contributions in Ellie's memory can be made to the VNA, 1110 Prim Road Colchester, VT 05446. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mark Church 1251 North Ave. Burlington, VT. On July 15, 2017 at 11:00 am. Burial will follow in New Mt. Calvary Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
