Howard C. Barber died peacefully at UVM Medical Center on Thursday April 20th following a stroke. He was 93. Howard was born in Burlington, VT on June 22, 1923. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Louise (Butler) Barber, 12 brothers and sisters, his wife Lorain and son Gary. Howard leaves 3 daughters and son in laws Lynn and Jack Russell, Kathy and Jim Murray, and Carol and Robert Story and 4 grandchildren Amy Russell, Brian & Claudia Russell, Christopher Story and Kate Story and many nieces and nephews. Howard served with honor in the United States Army in Europe during WWII. Upon returning home, he met and married Lorain "Pete" Peterson. They were happily married for over 68 years. Howard and Lorain lived most of their married life in South Burlington and had second homes first at Lake Carmi and then in South Hero and Ponce Inlet, Florida. Howard left school after completing the 9th grade, and worked at Mazel's Department Store, The Empire Laundry in Bennington, and Edlund Company before starting his own business building homes. First as Peterson & Barber Builders and then as Howard C. Barber, Builder, Howard developed land and built homes in South Burlington, Burlington, Shelburne, Milton and Georgia, VT. By assisting with their financing, he helped many young families buy their first homes and helped other builders grow their businesses. Howard retired at the age of 50 and enjoyed his remaining time playing the organ, tennis, horseshoes, ping pong and cards, gardening and working in his yard, walking the beach in Florida and most importantly spending time with family and friends. After the loss of his beloved wife, Lorain, in 2016, Howard lived at Pillsbury South where he received loving care and became a favorite of many. Howard was a man of strong faith and a communicant at St. John Vianney Church. Most of all he loved and always supported his wife and family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at St. John Vianney Church, South Burlington on Thursday April 27th at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Resurrection Park Cemetery in South Burlington. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Gary Barber Scholarship Fund at South Burlington High School or to St. Anne's Shrine in Isle La Motte.
