Lawrence Halvorson, 88, of Charlotte, Vermont passed away Sunday April 9th , 2017. He was born in Red Lodge, Montana July 30, 1928. He was the son of Beryle and Lawrence Eugene Halvorson. His earlier years were spent mostly in California in the town of Kingsburg. He joined the Marines after high school in 1948, spending 2 years in Guam, reaching the rank of sergeant. While in the Marines and later in college he had a successful amateur boxing career, winning the California Golden Gloves Boxing at 155 lbs. He returned to South Pasadena to marry the love of his life, Jaqueline Strong and spent the next 22 years there raising his family before moving to Georgia, VT in 1978. He and Jackie bought a small business on Church Street and so began the family business, Halvorson's Upstreet Cafe. Larry loved long car rides, whether cross country or across town; football and downhill skiing and jazz music - he became longtime friends with Big Joe Burrell. His greatest love was spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jackie Halvorson, his son Tim Halvorson and wife, Kristin and their children Lucy, Lawrence and Timmy all of Charlotte; his daughter Jane Halvorson and her fiancé, Dale Atherton of Enosburgh and her children Sam, Jackson and Sarah Boutin and their father, Bob and granddaughter Angie Lizotte of Burlington. Brothers Gail and Ronnie of California also survive him. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Jenifer and his 2 sisters Dona Walker and Adele Halvorson. The family would like to thank the staff of Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton, VT, especially Gina Smith for their kind care of Lar-Bear, as he was known to all there. Calling Hours will be held on Wednesday April 19, 2017 from 5:00 until 6:00PM with a Memorial Service beginning at 6:00 PM at the Ready Funeral Home 261 Shelburne Rd Burlington VT. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers please donate to Burlington Discover Jazz.
