Mary Catherine O'Brien passed away at the age of 92 on March 28th in Shelburne, Vermont. Mary was born on May 28, 1924, in Pittsford, Vermont to Alton Grace and Mary Carrigan Grace. She grew up on a small farm along with her 5 siblings, parents and her grandmother. She would say that although they grew up in the depression, she never realized how poor they were because they always had plenty to eat. Mary loved reminiscing about these years. After attending primary school in Pittsford, she lived with her sister Margaret in Rutland and graduated from Mount St Joseph High School. She was obtaining her nurse degree but chose to leave to come home and take care of her mother. She worked throughout her life in many jobs but especially loved working with Dot Anderson in the old South Burlington Post Office, as a switch board operator in Rutland, and as the switch board operator/dispatcher at St Michaels College for many years. She married Robert O'Brien in August of 1947 and they shared 60 wonderful years of marriage. Bob had to move many times with the airlines and Mary would make a new home for them in every new city. Mary had impeccable taste in making her homes beautiful. Mary was incredibly passionate and proud of her family. She and Bob raised six children together including Martha Phillips, Mary Ann O'Brien, John O'Brien (Cathy), Milissa O'Brien (Patrick), Christine Campeau (Norm), and Kevin Phillips. She is also survived by grandchildren Megan, Erin and Kelly O'Brien and great grandchildren Grace and Hayden Campeau, and Stella and Lily O'Brien, Joey and Charlie O'Brien, and Jacob Martineau. She is also survived by her sister Helen Mayville (Ken) and sister-in-laws Mary Grace, Louise O'Brien, and Sisters Helen and Martha, Sisters of Mercy, and many many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband Bob O'Brien, her parents, her siblings Margaret Slattery (Ned), Pete Grace (Catherine), and Art Grace (Dood) and Jim Grace. Mary loved being surrounded by family and friends, swapping stories. She loved traveling, dancing (particularly with her brother Archie), laughing and telling stories. Mary was the kind of person that took care of other people. She loved taking care of babies and was a natural at soothing to sleep the fussiest of babies. She would befriend elderly neighbors living on their own and make them a part of her family. She took loving care of her husband for many years. She was the family matriarch and will be dearly missed by all. The family would like to thank Sharon Robinson and Melanie Deserre for helping take such wonderful care of Mary in her final year. With their loving help, she was able to have her wish to live the remainder of her life at John and Cathy's home. Calling hours will be on Friday March 31, 2017 from 4:00-7:00 PM at the Ready Funeral Home and Cremation Services South Chapel 261 Shelburne Rd. Burlington, VT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM Saturday April 1st at St John Vianney Catholic Church, Hinesburg Road, South Burlington VT. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mary's life. The burial will follow at a later date in Pittsford, VT.
