Richard Hess, 65 of Charlotte, VT died March 16, 2017 after a 3 year battle with esophageal cancer. Dick died at home peacefully surrounded by his wife and three daughters. As a native Vermonter, Dick grew up in Arlington Vermont where he experienced a "Norman Rockwell" childhood: fishing in the Battenkill River and skiing at Bromley and Stratton Mountains where he met his wife Meghan Williams. They moved to Burlington Vermont in 1987. Dick dedicated his life to his family, friends, and community. He was as genuine as was his ever present smile. A friend to everyone, he personified the definition of strong work ethic and small town values. As owner of Queen City Tavern in Burlington and later Archie's Grill of Shelburne, Vermont, Dick created community, befriending all and sharing his passion for food and cooking. With his talent in the kitchen Dick always created a meal that was exquisite, whether it was a barbecue or an elaborate holiday dinner. When not cooking, he looked forward to dining out at his favorite restaurants. Dick enjoyed many sports but his love for golf and the time he spent on the golf course with good friends and family was one of his favorite pastimes. When not on the course, he was a dedicated spectator at many local sporting events. During his 31 years of sobriety, Dick helped many find support and strength through AA. Dick is survived by his wife Meghan, daughter Hannah of Charlotte, Vermont, daughter Sophie of Portland, Maine, daughter Emma of Charlotte, Vermont, brother Ron, sister in-law Michelle and niece Tracy Hess of Daytona, Florida, and all of "Williams Nation". Calling Hours will be held on Friday March 24, 2017 from 4:00 until 7:00 PM at St. Jude Church Parish Center, VT. Route 116 Hinesburg, VT. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday March 25, 2017 at 11:00 AM at St. Jude Catholic Church. Burial will take place later this spring. Ready Funeral Home and Cremation Services 261 Shelburne Rd. Burlington, VT has been entrusted with handling the arrangements. A thank you to the amazing care he received from Dr. Unger and his entire staff at Champlain Valley Hematology/Oncology and especially to Margaret Sussman, Amy Fox, and Stephanie Peaver as well as the staff who cared for Dick at the University of Vermont Medical Center over the past 3 years.
