Robert MacLeod Single, 89, died on February 26, 2018 in Shelburne VT surrounded by Love. Bob was born in Freeport NY on June 26, 1928, the son of Henry and Anne (MacLeod) Single, and beloved brother of Ruth (Single) Allen. He was a Korean War Veteran, retired teacher, retired Army Colonel, and retired Knicks fan - retiring after the Ewing era. Bob was pre-deceased by his wife, and the love of his life, June (Ziegenfuss) Single in 1979. He was a wonderful father, raising three young children as a single parent and coaching/assisting for each of them. He is survived by his son David, daughter-in-law Michele, and grandsons Tom and Bill; his son Richard, daughter-in-law Peg, and granddaughter Anne; and his daughter Joanne. Bob graduated from the 16th Officer Candidate School class of 1952 in Fort Sill, OK. He went to Korea where he served as a forward observer, calling back coordinates of enemy artillery. He continued to serve in the Army reserves and rose to the rank of Colonel. Bob loved sharing knowledge and was a natural educator. He was known as a supportive and challenging teacher in the Bellmore schools. Decades later he was reacquainted with someone Bob remembered as one of his best students, who was now his cardiac surgeon. The former student/surgeon, who saved his life from a mid-procedure heart attack, remarked after surgery "Mr. Single, you made me work hard in sixth grade and you made me work hard again today." Bob was a dedicated early member of the Massapequa Soccer Club, serving as a coach, assistant, and scheduler of referees. He was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist in Massapequa. Bob was active in the Freeport Community Concerts and the Freeport High School alumni band. His love of music was evident through his singing, whistling, and blasting Tchaikovsky symphonies. Bob’s compassion and selflessness were unmatched. He will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all who knew him.
